Guiding Thoughtful Conversations, Illuminating Shared Paths.

About

Welcome to NorthStar Perspectives! My name is David Hanslip, and this space reflects my journey through leadership, service, and lifelong learning.

About Me

Welcome to NorthStar Perspectives!

I am a Proud Canadian 🇨🇦, a Leader, and an Instructor with The Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, where I’ve been involved since 1988—first as a cadet and now as an instructor. My life has been shaped by self-discipline, integrity, and a commitment to service.

My Professional Journey

I began my career in the security industry in 1997, where I developed a strong foundation in safety, risk management, and community protection. In 2010, I stepped away from security to pursue a new challenge—an apprenticeship as a 310S Automotive Service Technician. Over the next 14 years, I practiced in the automotive field, earning my Red Seal Journeyperson status and gaining hands-on experience in diagnostics, repair, and customer service.

In 2024, I returned to the security profession with renewed purpose, bringing with me the discipline and problem-solving skills honed during my time in the automotive industry. Today, I have over 20 years of experience as a Security Professional, working in high-security environments, retail, and healthcare.

Service and Leadership

Beyond my professional work, I have proudly served as a volunteer officer with the Navy League of Canada, progressing through every position—from instructor to Commanding Officer. After taking time away to raise my three children with my wife of over 20 years, I returned to the Cadet Program as a Civilian Instructor with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, where I continue to mentor youth and foster leadership.

I also serve as the voluntary Security Chairperson for Am Shalom Congregation, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for our community.

Life Outside Work

When I’m not working, teaching cadets, or focusing on security initiatives, I love spending time outdoors with my wife, children, and our dogs. Fishing, hiking, and simply enjoying nature are some of my favorite ways to recharge.

Why NorthStar Perspectives?

I started NorthStar Perspectives to help grow and develop leaders. Leadership is not just a title—it’s a responsibility. I believe the world needs stronger leaders and better leadership examples, and I’m passionate about creating spaces where that growth can happen.

My personal philosophy is simple:

  • Listen with an open mind
  • Lead with integrity
  • Commit to continuous growth and development

Every experience offers a perspective worth sharing, and this site is my platform to share insights on leadership, legacy, and lessons learned—from security and service to personal growth and community engagement.
