Leadership Starts With Self-Leadership

When we think about leadership, we often picture guiding others—giving direction, making decisions, inspiring teams. But the truth is, leadership begins long before you step in front of a group. It starts with the person in the mirror.

Self-leadership is the foundation of every great leader. It’s about managing your own thoughts, actions, and habits before you try to influence anyone else. If you can’t lead yourself, how can you expect others to follow?


Why Self-Leadership Matters

  • Credibility: People follow leaders they trust. If your words and actions don’t align, trust erodes quickly.
  • Resilience: Leading others is demanding. Without personal discipline and emotional control, stress will take over.
  • Example: Your behavior sets the tone. Teams mirror what they see.

My Wake-Up Call

Years ago, while working as a Site Supervisor with Paladin Security, I received a letter written to my superiors about my lack of leadership behavior. At first glance, that sounds harsh—but the truth is, they were right. I had started to let my self-discipline slip, and it showed.

I was called into a meeting to discuss the letter, which at the time was anonymous. After reading it, I wasn’t angry. I was upset and disappointed—not in the writer, but in myself. In fact, I respected the person who wrote it because I believed they were trying to help me become a better leader. They cared enough to speak up.

Over the next few months, I worked hard to address the concerns raised. Eventually, the writer identified themselves and told me they had noticed the change. I thanked them for taking the steps to help me and explained that I was never upset about the letter—only disappointed in my own lapse.

That experience taught me something invaluable: be humble and accept criticism. It’s usually offered to help you grow. From that day forward, I committed to always being the leader I needed at the beginning of my career. I’ve had many great examples to follow—and some poor ones—but this moment reminded me that we can learn from everyone, no matter where they are in their journey.


Practical Ways to Lead Yourself

  1. Define Your Values
    Know what you stand for. For me, values like integrity, service, and growth guide every decision I make.
  2. Build Daily Habits
    Leadership isn’t built in big moments—it’s forged in small, consistent actions. Exercise, prayer, journaling, or study can keep you grounded.
  3. Own Your Mistakes
    Accountability starts with you. When you admit your errors, you model humility and courage.
  4. Invest in Learning
    Read, listen, and seek mentors. Growth is a lifelong process, and leaders never stop learning.
