Leadership is often misunderstood. Too many associate it with rank, status, or authority. But real leadership isn’t about being in charge—it’s about being accountable, being present, and being willing to serve.
After more than 36 years of experience in military policing, security, and youth mentorship, I’ve come to understand leadership as a daily practice rooted in values. It’s not something you switch on when convenient—it’s something you live, even when no one’s watching.
So, what does true leadership look like?
It’s built on a foundation of core values:
- Integrity – Doing the right thing, especially when it’s hard.
- Empathy – Listening with intent and leading with compassion.
- Accountability – Owning your actions and their consequences.
- Vision – Seeing beyond the moment and guiding others toward a better future.
- Courage – Standing firm in your values, even under pressure.
- Service – Putting others first and lifting them up.
These values aren’t exclusive to CEOs or politicians. Leadership lives in our homes, our communities, our workplaces, and in youth programs like Cadets, Junior Canadian Rangers, Scouts Canada, and 4-H. These organizations are doing incredible work to shape the next generation of leaders—young people who will one day carry the torch forward.
Leadership Is a Shared Duty
I believe that every one of us has a role to play in developing leaders. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, mentor, or peer, your actions—both intentional and unconscious—set examples that others follow. We never know who’s watching, learning, or being inspired by how we lead.
That’s why I encourage healthy and respectful discussion and debate. Growth doesn’t happen in silence—it happens when ideas are challenged, when perspectives are shared, and when we’re willing to listen and learn. Creating space for these conversations is one of the most basic duties of leadership.
