One summer, our tight-knit museum crew decided to spice up a slow afternoon with a bit of naval mischief. We “commandeered” a colleague’s roast beef sandwich from the galley and launched a full-scale scavenger hunt across the ship—complete with riddles, clues, and a dramatic ransom call from the gift shop.
Disguised voice: “We have your lunch. If you want to see it alive again, leave a bottle of dark rum in the galley. If you call the police, we’ll load your sandwich into the 4-inch guns and launch it across the bay at noon.”
She sprinted to the fridge. The first clue was waiting. Her sandwich? Hidden in the port-side anti-aircraft mount. The second clue? Directly across in the starboard mount—but it would be a while before the trail led her back to that spot.
It was all in good fun—and it brought us even closer as a team. That summer was full of shenanigans, laughter, and some of the best work memories I’ve ever had.
To this day, roast beef sandwiches still make me smile.
